From Test-Scratch-Wiki
Welcome to my talk page!
I was using that page
They haven't made me an admin yet, and I really wasn't done improving that page. Could it be unprotected since ths wiki is still under construction? U W N (talk) 21:54, 30 October 2015 (MET)
- OK, I unprotected it. Just be warned that once this opens for real, we will have to protect it, though you will probably have admin privileges at that point.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 23:00, 30 October 2015 (MET)- You're talking about the frontpage, right? Sorry, but is it really necessary to protect the frontpage? We don't have it protected in any other wiki either... - LiFaytheGoblin (talk) 23:07, 30 October 2015 (MET)
- Yeah, this is about the front page. We actually do have it protected on the English Wiki, as it is a page that doesn't need to change very frequently and any change that does occur can be easily be done by an admin, but it is a very important page that we want to make sure always looks nice.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 23:11, 30 October 2015 (MET)
Well, I have seen many mods of confirm account. Does yours automatically create them as autoconfirmed? The original does, so if you haven't changed it, say yes. U W N (talk) 00:10, 31 October 2015 (MET)
Well, actually, I'm going to be a technical admin, so I don't know if I will be getting sysop. I'll have to re-consult with Martin. U W N (talk) 00:14, 31 October 2015 (MET)
- It does create users as autoconfirmed users. However, since there really is no reason for non-admins to edit the page at all, we figured it would be safer to protect it for admins only. Also, I am actually a "technical" admin too. Though I am working on setting up the Wiki itself, I actually mostly do code work. For example, so far I have upgraded the version of MediaWiki, retrofitted the Scratch Wiki Skin to work on MediaWiki 1.25, and set up the Scratch-modded version of ConfirmAccounts here.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 01:57, 31 October 2015 (MET)
Well, would you mind setting up a protect level where only members of the project can edit? Code is this:
$wgRestrictionLevels[] = 'DACHadmins';
$wgGroupPermissions['DACHadmins']['DACHadmins'] = true;
$wgGroupPermissions['DACHadmins']['protect'] = true;
$wgGroupPermissions['DACHadmins']['unprotect'] = true;
$wgAddGroups['DACHadmins'][] = 'DACHadmins';
$wgRemoveGroups['DACHadmins'][] = 'DACHadmins';
Then go here, and check the box labeled DACHadmins. Then I can fix other things from there. U W N (talk) 02:11, 31 October 2015 (MET)
Actually, they changed my job again. Now it is to manage coordination between projects. U W N (talk) 16:11, 31 October 2015 (MET)
- I don't know exactly what position title we should be using, but I agree that we should have something for people who work with the project but aren't full administrators here. I think something like "Project Manager" would work. Do you agree?
jvvg (talk | contribs) 23:18, 1 November 2015 (MET)
I'm OK with that, but I think Mtwoll wants to have EWs instead--let's merge them. U W N (talk) 16:31, 4 November 2015 (MET)
Are we gonna set up WikiMonitor soon?
I was the only one who volunteered to host it, so please let me know if I can. Since I don't have the WikiMonitor password on Scratch, if it is me I need it hand-approved. U W N (talk) 04:10, 5 November 2015 (MET)
- Since this is still being set up, we should probably wait until everything else is done. However, once it is done, I will send you the files and instructions on how to use it. Just be warned that it requires PHP with the command-line libraries and cURL installed on the computer you're running it on.

Template questions
Hello, i'm making a to do list for the French Wiki but i have problem with the progress bar. I let you see http://test.scratch-wiki.info/wiki/Fr:Scratch_Wiki_Accueil/autre/to_do_list Can you help me please ? Smrman (talk) 18:57, 18 November 2015 (MET)
- The problem is that the template you're trying to reference doesn't exist. Someone needs to create the page Template:Progress bar for you to be able to use it. I'm not great at templates, so you may want to consider asking ErnieParke instead.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 04:00, 19 November 2015 (MET)
- Ok thanks for the explainations Smrman (talk) 16:42, 19 November 2015 (MET)
- If you want to create a Progrss bar template you could look here: http://wiki.scratch.mit.edu/wiki/User:PrincessPandaLover/On_the_way_to_1,000 Mtwoll (talk) 20:07, 19 November 2015 (MET)
- But were did you get that text here?
{{Progress bar|<85>}} {{Progression|85}} {{Composition bar|85|100|red}} {{Percentage bar|85|c=red}} {{Percent-done|done=85|total=100}} {{Progress meter|<85>}} or {{Progress meter|current=<85>}} {{percentile|85}} {{Backlog progress bar|initial=0 |goal=100 |category=|unit= }} {{Stage short|85%}}
- If It's from the English scratch-wiki the templates should be there and therefore also here, because user:ErnieParke transferred all templates from there to here... Mtwoll (talk) 20:14, 19 November 2015 (MET)
Stardard & language namespaces
Hi there!
I recently joined this site to help on the Spanish test-wiki. I've been checking all the docs here in order to get started properly, but some doubts remain. Hope these aren't answered elsewhere, I promise I looked thoroughly...
- I saw that language namespaces were changed from 2 to 3 digits last year, so in our case from Es: to Spa:. Old Es: pages are there but they correctly redirect to their Spa: counterparts. But: the Community portal (here) is working the other way around, that is, Spa:Portal de la comunidad redirects to Talk:Es:Portal de la comunidad. This may not be a crucial issue, but I suspect that's related to the next question.
- As I create namespaced pages (Help or Templates, for example), should they be Spa:Template:Whatever or Template:Spa:Whatever? That's how I create them via link, anyway? (say writing [[Spa:Template:Whatever]] in an existing page)
- I understand that standard namespaces are usually translated as well, are they? So in our Spanish wiki it would actually be something like Spa:Plantilla:Lo que sea. Do I just create the links like that? Or are these translations done elsewhere for the whole site?
Thanks a lot in advance. Again, I hope I'm not re-asking already answered questions... I'm eager to start editing, but I want to do things in the proper order!!

Creating a new wiki
Hi, i've read some articles about getting started, and i cannot understand how i can create a new wiki (i. e. ro.scratch-wiki.info). From what i've read, i need to create some pages for the Wiki before actually creating a new subdomain. Is this true? LankyBox01 (talk) 18:47, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
- Yes, you need to create a sufficient amount of pages and have an active community before getting a full subdomain Wiki. The reason for this is a full subdomain Wiki requires more resources and management effort.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 21:22, 3 January 2021 (UTC)- How do i start tough? LankyBox01 (talk) 06:27, 4 January 2021 (UTC)
- First, let me or another administrator know what Wiki you want to create, and we'll set up the namespace for you. Then, start editing pages in that namespace.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 15:28, 4 January 2021 (UTC)- Ok, well, can you create a romanian (RO) Wiki? LankyBox01 (talk) 16:30, 4 January 2021 (UTC)
- The Romanian Wiki has the necessary groundwork in place. You have a namespace, a main page (Ro:Pagina principală), and are linked on the front page. Now start creating pages under that namespace to build out the Wiki.

Embedding GIFs
Hi Jvvg, I'm having trouble embedding GIFs and images and formatting pages, can you please link a tutorial or something that helps with wiki editing? Thanks :D
PhoenixSF (talk) 17:43, 15 March 2021 (UTC)PhoenixSF
- We have a whole set of tutorials on the English Wiki. Basically everything from the tutorials there is also applicable here.

IA-maker (talk) 18:13, 14 May 2021 (UTC)
Hi, i saw you marked to make it bigger in hindi wiki logo and i was and am working on itPurvitekriwal (talk) 04:57, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
- Excellent. No rush, just wanted to mark that we needed something higher resolution.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 16:25, 21 February 2022 (UTC)- Yes, I understand I was just informing you as I cannot host images so I gave it to a shop in the forum to do that but they gave this so I have made a few changes in the project i made the symbol too and then reordered it at other shop.Purvitekriwal (talk) 03:06, 22 February 2022 (UTC)
Request of Making Hindi Wiki An official wiki now!
Hello jvvg, I am -StarGold-. I am writing this message to let you know that we are already ready to launch Hindi Wiki as an official wiki now because of the following reasons:
- We have 190 pages in Wiki.
- Updates are made on regular basis.
- I ,along with SPS32 and intelgenartion can welcome and guide new Hindi Wikians and ask them to work effectively in the wiki.
- We have a set of rules for Hindi Wiki and also a welcoming template.
- We have a set of active users .
- We have all the updated and latest pages.
- Our activity will be at peak in March every year because we would be free from exams.
- Scratchers have gradually started showing interest in Hindi Wiki.
- We have a management of 3-5 members so we can manage everything.
What I feel that if Hindi Wiki becomes official,so the participation of Hindi Wiki will increase.We are all set to go and we promise to work actively for Hindi Wiki,act as leaders and guides.
Now please,please ,please make Hindi Wiki ,an official Wiki. I and my colleagues can't wait any longer. We want to see this as an official wiki.
Thanking you, -StarGold- (talk) 11:50, 6 January 2026 (UTC)
- Looking at the recent changes, other than today, there were fewer than 20 edits in the Hin and Hin talk namespaces in the last 90 days, which does not indicate sustained activity. While it's great that a bunch of edits were made today, this needs to continue at a sustained pace and not just the occasional short burst.

While it's great that a bunch of edits were made today, this needs to continue at a sustained pace and not just the occasional short burst.
- But I think our activity will increase more if it's converted into an official wiki now! We have not been making much updates because of the following two reasons:
- Wiki Wednesday is still down. There's no official Wiki Wednesday since a couple of months.
- As told by you, our team was facing glitches on opening Test Wiki domain,so much of them went for a break.
- Updation of Images on Hindi Wiki Home Page is planned to updated again only when the Wiki is officially formed.
Thank you so much! Warm Regards.
-StarGold- (talk) 06:44, 7 January 2026 (UTC)
- I submitted Wiki Wednesday for this month, the Scratch Team just hasn't posted it. That being said, it's your responsibility to attract editors, and it's the responsibility of the existing editors to maintain activity. We also have had the issues resolved for a pretty significant amount of time, and other language Wikis were still able to maintain activity during this time. You also do not need a dedicated Wiki to update images on the homepage. The Hindi Wiki (and any other Test Wiki) needs to maintain a sustained level of activity to be promoted to a "full" Wiki since doing that involves taking on more engineering responsibility, and we want to make sure that it's worth it to take it on. Continuing to remind me (or the other admins) about this is not going to make it happen any faster; maintaining activity is your responsibility.

Hi ,I completely understand what you want us to do. But it's been more than a year since it's been in WIP. I was wishing to get a chance to get my dream fulfilled... So how long will it take? Our team is doing everything as said by you.Maintaining,creating and updating pages. If you feel that we don't have a active community here because we don't use community portal much often here,we generally use the forums as everyone is comfortable discussing there. Here's our portal that we have been using before Hindi Forums was made-
https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/807046/?page=
Sorry if it annoyed you but we are just curious,excited and wanted to see this as an official wiki in the beginning of 2026. I,Arya50, Intelgeneration and SPS32 are already ready and have been experienced in handling ,updating and managing administrative stuffs of a real wiki. Please just give us an opportunity to prove this .Btw we are already inviting ,finding new Wikians and widening our community.(We have 9-10 members but I feel it would be more if it becomes official). Just trust me please. I will take the responsibility to handle the official wiki and would ensure that it doesn't become a workload for you.
Please,it's a humble request. It's been a long time we all have been waiting for. Thanking you for considering my message Regards -StarGold- (talk) 07:09, 8 January 2026 (UTC)
Also according to this source "What does a Wiki need to be "strong enough" to survive? A wiki is "strong enough" if it has an active community and it has structures that would help it be active even if some authors leave. Therefore it needs:
- 3-5 active authors (must be native speaker of that language and have enough scratch and wiki experience to write proper articles)[For Hindi Wiki,we have 9-10 members out of which atleast 4 are active)
- Somebody who cares for technology administration (The existing admins of the international scratch wikis can do that) -This is also fulfilled.
- Somebody or multiple people who make content decisions and does community administration (in case of disputes and edit-wars) - This is fulfilled
- Regular inflow of new authors (including technology and description "how to get author")
- A working community portal- I made the portal
- A introduction page- We have that
- Help pages for editors- We have one complete pages with all rules of Hindi Wiki
- A working wiki skin of that language- Already done last year
- A decent amount of:
- Articles- We have 190
- Templates that are used by articles- We have 4-5 templates
- Categories that are used by articles-We have 4-5 categories
Note: These must be good enough to be used as "best practice" for new articles, templates and categories. New authors will always look at old existing items to see how to make new content, so if you have good starting-items (articles, templates, categories), the whole wiki-future will profit from that. When you think your wiki is "strong enough" to survive, feel free to contact user:Jvvg, user:ErnieParke or user:Mtwoll, who will help you to transfer the wiki of your language from a Test-Scratch-Wiki to a Test-Scratch-Wiki:Real_Scratch_Wikis.- So please according to the analysis, we strongly feel that we would survive."
Sorry for confusion. Please consider this time as now I feel our Wiki is good in developing and I am already inviting each and every person in the wiki.
Thanks again. I still hope that you would give me an opportunity.
Regards -StarGold- (talk) 12:59, 8 January 2026 (UTC)
- Hi, I appreciate the work that the existing editors have put in and I'd like to make clear that you've already done tremendous work in making information about Scratch accessible to Hindi readers. A test wiki with this much content is already a significant achievement and you should not feel any less proud of your work just because it doesn't have its own site.
- With that said, let me point out a few things we are still missing from the list you correctly cited:
- 3-5 active authors - Special:ActiveUsers lists 3 Hindi editors total. Of those 3, 2 of them have made a combined total of 6 actions in the last 30 days. To truly call this 3 active authors would, in my mind, be too generous. And ideally the number would be far greater.
- Regular inflow of new authors - This is the main thing we're missing right now. MithaiMochi was the most recent Hindi author to join and they have made zero contributions to the Hindi wiki since joining. We have no evidence to suggest that anyone will be joining more frequently. Given you have plenty of articles, your top priority now should be attracting new Hindi authors.
- I am willing to concede that the Hindi wiki does fulfill the other criteria, more or less.
- I'd also like to point out that "it will become more active once it is a real wiki" is not an argument we will accept. What we are looking for is demonstrated consistent activity in the test wiki. I look forward to the day when the Hindi wiki succeeds in that.
- Again, thank you for your contribution to the Hindi Scratch community so far.

Alright! I do agree what you want us to do. So you want us to invite more Hindi Wikians? Btw as stated earlier in the post above,we didn't gain that much activity because there was some issue coming with server so most of us went on a break. Our activity might be slow in February and September because in India,we have exams going on during these months. We are mostly active after March. Since a year,we have using this forum portal for discussion- https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/807046/?page=
It has 800+ replies which justify that we are still planning actively for Hindi Wiki and have an active community for planning ,discussion.
I already reminded Arya50 and other members. Only task is left that I need to provide them with tasks,which I am going to do today or tomorrow: https://scratch.mit.edu/users/arya50/#comments-399333423
One more Contributor is also active- https://scratch.mit.edu/users/RAMANRANJAN2282/#comments-399333341
Also MithaiMochi is ill so,they couldn't contribute: https://scratch.mit.edu/users/MithaiMochi/#comments-399160223
So,we are going to maintain the activity,so I thought we were ready? Actually,I was eagar if we could get chance because atleast 3 of us are good in administrative tasks now. What do you think??? Thanks and Regards -StarGold- (talk) 07:24, 9 January 2026 (UTC)
