From Test-Scratch-Wiki

What?

What should I do, in specific? I will do anything. --JayceeMinecraft (talk) 22:00, 21 October 2015 (MEST)

  1. Read: http://wiki.scratch.mit.edu/wiki/Scratch_Wiki_talk:Community_Portal/Archive_81#New Idea for the future of international Scratch-Wiki or even more
  2. Try to Help user:ErnieParke, user:jvvg, user:KrisMa and other to create that kind of test-scratch-wiki that enable international Scratchers to make a start with their language, we need many creative solutions for that and you must cooperate very good with the others
  3. It would be helpful, just to find out how it works, to start with your earlier idea of an Nigerian(Igbo)-Wiki here in an separate igbo-Namespace, with an igbo-Homepage and so on.
  4. If Igbo isn't your thing anymore try an other language that you know: We must have examples to find out how it works to separate different languages by namespace
  5. We also must find out how to work with templates: Transfer an use the English-Wiki-Templates? Use native Template for every language and so on...
  6. Don't ask me, ask yourself or the others ;-)
  7. May the force be with you ;-)

Can you install the WikiEditor extension? --JayceeMinecraft (talk) 22:33, 21 October 2015 (MEST)

Hi!

When we launch our new wiki (and we are considering having linked logins), one's username should match the one on scratch.mit.edu, and since this is not your username there (while you have one under that name), I think you should probably switch. U W N (talk) 20:18, 2 November 2015 (MET)

Thanks for the suggestion. See: http://wiki.scratch.mit.edu/wiki/User_talk:ErnieParke#Mtwoll_redirect Mtwoll (talk) 01:15, 4 November 2015 (MET)
Actually, because the account "Mtwoll" on Scratch belongs to you, I think you'll be alright. But what about the user "admin"? U W N (talk) 02:08, 4 November 2015 (MET)
user:admin is the default user de:user:akhof used to set up this Mediawiki Mtwoll (talk)

New Accounts

Why do you keep creating them? I was under the impression that the Test Wiki wasn't ready yet. U W N (talk) 19:11, 8 November 2015 (MET)

Where is the problem? Why do you care? It's an advantage to attract users from different languages alteady now to test if our concepts work. It could only be a disadvantage for that users but they know that changes of concepts can still happen. So you could call them Beta-Tester ;-) Mtwoll (talk) 20:00, 8 November 2015 (MET)

Question about copyright and new Wiki in French

Hi Mtwoll, as you know, I'm creating a Scratch Wiki in French. I found a website in French were all is explain about Scratch and the Scratch's World. I would like to copy a lot from this site but i'm not sur I can. This is (on this site) a autommatic translating from the English Scratch Wiki. It's written below the edit box that "I can't submit copyrighted work without permisson" but i'm not sure this site has a copyright and i don't found where I can contact the author. Could you help me please ? link of the websitein french Smrman (talk) 14:41, 18 November 2015 (MET)

I can only tell you what you already know: You can't submit copyrighted work without permission. You have to get the permission of the author if there is no explicit information that the material is free of copyright at the webpage. You should be better then me to find this out at a french website (I only speak German and English) ;-) Mtwoll (talk) 16:47, 19 November 2015 (MET)

block

hi MtWoll: I'm going to test the unblock-oneself system by trying to block myself: so don't be scared :) when you see this post and if I am still block, please unblock me! Thank you for your help! KrIsMa (talk) 05:13, 3 January 2016 (MET)

Hello!

Hello there, Mtwoll! :D -MysteryMaker- (talk) 00:06, 27 February 2016 (MET)

Hello :-) - funny, the wiki just sent me a Mail that you changed my user discussion a page...so for me it seems to work. Did you control that every body you tried to communicate via the sendmail function has put his email address in his user profile? Please: I don't have much time I can invest here, so I want to work as effective as possible. So please have a look at the other involved people here: de:Scratch-Wiki:Watch. French Wiki

Hi, I saw you changed the homepage of the Wiki i'm managing (the Frenchérit Wiki). I just wanted to know why... Is it a personal or a group's décision of the Test-Wiki Team? Is it obligatory or can I make it like earlier?

Smrman (talk) Smrman's logo.gif 19:01, 4 May 2016 (MEST)

Hi Smrman,
sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your question. Because I think your question could be asked be many others, I copied and answered it to:
S:PORTAL#Changes at the top of almost every page, including Homepages so everybody sees it and can take part in the discussion. Mtwoll (talk) 22:21, 4 May 2016 (MEST)

Hi, I have another question. (Yes, I know, i'm tiring ^^)

So, when I go on this page and I want to modify her, I don't find the pencil!

I checked out the code lines with the browser's development tools to see into the lines if our blue pencil is still there and I didn't found anything...

But, when I type the good URL (http://test.scratch-wiki.info/w/index.php?title=Fra:Scratch_Wiki_Accueil/autre/%C3%A9diter_le_wiki/discussion_sur_une_page&action=edit), I can access to the editor and modify my page as I want.

Why does the pencil disappear? Is it because the page's name is too long? Can we solve this little problem easily?

Thanks a lot.

Smrman (talk) Smrman's logo.gif 23:42, 7 May 2016 (MEST)

I think the name is to long for the layout. The layout is determind by the skin. You could try to improve it, it's on github, see faq about skin. Because it's the same than in en: you could also try to discuss that at en:S:PORTAL. I will not invest efforts there, it's very special and you already found a worarround. But if you solve it, by improving the wiki skin, it could help the community of all scratch wikis. Mtwoll (talk) 03:57, 8 May 2016 (MEST)

Creating new template

Hi,

I'd like to create a new template for my wiki but i don't know how to do it...

I'd like to use this template to show a picture on my Wiki's homepage without importing the picture in the Test-Wiki.

So, it's a "dynamic request".

I found that the best way to do this was with jquery but i don't speak jquery. :/

Mhh, i'll show you the steps that the temlate should do:

what the code should do:

  1. Go on the Scratch website.
  2. Find in the source-code which is the last selected project (in the "Selected projects" bar).
  3. Find the project's thumbnail's URL of this project.
  4. Return the result(the URL).

and then, on the page..

  1. Display the picture with the returned URL.

I lnow it's very difficult what i want. Do you think it's possible.

I already have checked on the internet.

In jquery, to get sourcecode on an URL, we use $.get( url [, data ] [, success ] [, dataType ] )

But i think dysplaying a picture from a link is still impossible.

What do you think about?

Smrman (talk) Smrman's logo.gif 17:26, 21 May 2016 (MEST)

I'm really delighted that you want to make your own templates! But I'm not so happy that the reason for that are external images, because I'm sorry that I have to disappoint you about that: We don't allow external images until now and there is a Switch in Mediawiki that is set on "don't allow it" by default (like in Wikipedia and many other Wikis). Reasons for that are explained here:
I hope that you don't mind to upload your images to avoid that problem. Sorry again! Thank you very much for your understanding in advance. Mtwoll (talk) 18:05, 21 May 2016 (MEST)
Ok, thanks a lot for the quick answer.
I understand this decision although i am a bit disappointed...
I still have learned that a whitelist exists.
So, I think i'll give up my project with the "selected project"
Thanks again for your tips and advices

Test-Scratch-Wiki:To-Do

Hi Mtwoll,

Regarding suggestion #6 which you made: I'm not sure why exactly we would want to do this. The difference between the two magic words is that {{PAGESINNAMESPACE:index}} includes disambiguation pages and redirects, whereas {{NUMBEROFARTICLES}} doesn't. I can't think of any reason why it would be better to list redirects and disambiguation pages as well, because generally they're not considered actual articles. Hamish752 (talk) 01:00, 21 July 2016 (MEST)

It's because we don't need the number of all articles of the whole wiki, but the number of articles of every different languages. Mtwoll (talk) 23:01, 21 July 2016 (MEST)

Elections

Hi Mtwoll, can we arrange for another election sometime? It would be awesome!:)

@User:S-zhangcha:
1. I'm happy that you started editing the wiki and I do want to help you build a chinese scratch wiki!:)
2. What kind of election du you mean?
3. Please sign your posts by putting ~~~~ at the end
Mtwoll (talk) 00:44, 18 February 2017 (MET)

Never mind, I mean like making a create-an-account page for our wiki. :) User:S-zhangcha (talk) 07:44, 18 February 2017 (MET)

Why do we need an election for making a create-an-account page? There already is a kind of such page at How-To-Scratch-Wiki but if you want you can make it better. And naturally you can make a chinese one: I would like to have many chinese editors...can you motivate more of them? Perhaps by posting in the chinese forum? Mtwoll (talk) 07:28, 18 February 2017 (MET)
No, I mean how to put Special pages on a wikiS-zhangcha (talk) 01:19, 16 May 2017 (MEST)
You can't create and edit Special:SpecialPages like regular pages. This pages are part of the MediaWiki-Software and its AddOns and created by the wiki automatically. Excuse me for answering late and not really understanding what you have in mind, it's not so easy with that language barrier but we should try until it works :-) Mtwoll (talk) 11:18, 17 October 2017 (UTC)
Sorry, but I mean elections as to vote for new admins and such.

Stardard & language namespaces

Hi there!

(I've posted this elsewhere, but I don't get an answer so I'll try it here. Hope you can help me.)

I recently joined this site to help on the Spanish test-wiki. I've been checking all the docs here in order to get started properly, but some doubts remain. Hope these aren't answered elsewhere, I promise I looked thoroughly... :)

  • I saw that language namespaces were changed from 2 to 3 digits last year, so in our case from Es: to Spa:. Old Es: pages are there but they correctly redirect to their Spa: counterparts. But: the Community portal (here) is working the other way around, that is, Spa:Portal de la comunidad redirects to Talk:Es:Portal de la comunidad. This may not be a crucial issue, but I suspect that's related to the next question.
  • As I create namespaced pages (Help or Templates, for example), should they be Spa:Template:Whatever or Template:Spa:Whatever? That's how I create them via link, anyway? (say writing [[Spa:Template:Whatever]] in an existing page)
  • I understand that standard namespaces are usually translated as well, are they? So in our Spanish wiki it would actually be something like Spa:Plantilla:Lo que sea. Do I just create the links like that? Or are these translations done elsewhere for the whole site?

Thanks a lot in advance. Again, I hope I'm not re-asking already answered questions... I'm eager to start editing, but I want to do things in the proper order!!

Frjurado (talk) 23:38, 27 April 2017 (MEST)

Dear Frjurado,
Please excuse very much for not answering you for such a long time. Hope you're still active here? Somehow the mail-system that should inform me anytime somebody edits my discussion page seemed not to work properly. We decided for changing the namespaces to 3-digits last year to enable the 2-digits Interwiki-System at the same time. Many technical questions to enable multiple languages in one wiki are not solved until now and I'm sorry that your question about the namespace for templates of a certain language is one of it: As far as I found out only one "template"-namespace is possible, so we must find another way to divide the languages within that template namespace: I would suggest with a "-" or a "/" that can later - when the language-spaces is tranfered to a real wiki be moved by the bot to the "template"-namespace of that real wiki...I'm not sure. I did a little bit research and networking about what and who could help us, see: Test-Scratch-Wiki_talk:Community_Portal/Not_Done#Ideas who could help to create a wiki-farm. About account requests

What should I do with:

  • Blank account requests? (reject immediately?)
  • Account requests that simply say "I want to make a wiki in this language"? (hold?)

Thanks in advance. --Kenny2scratch (talk) 11:43, 17 October 2017 (UTC)

We want to have much lower barriers in this Test-Wiki than in the English Scratch-wiki because we want to attract authors that are not native in the English language. Also, we did not exactly make clear what the applicants should write in their applications. Therefore it would not be good to reject applications to fast. But at the other side applications should make sense and should not lead to disappointments at both sides. I often solved the problem by writing a personal eMail to the applicants (if eMail-address is given) or editing their user page. Sadly it often turned out as a waste of my time because there was no reaction. So generally we should develop a more automatic system to make only the right applications possible. Until then and for that existing applications, an individual solution is necessary. Mtwoll (talk) 12:07, 17 October 2017 (UTC)
Hmm... In that case, I think that blank requests should be held - if I'm not mistaken what I write in the "reasoning" box is what is sent to the email address? If that's the case, I can ask them through there...

Do I count as a "coach" by the way? :)
└─post by kenny2scratch (talk|contribs) 12:31, 17 October 2017 (UTC)
"reasoning box": yes I think so like in the logfile I wrote: "Hi Kenny, good to have you here! :-) best regards Martin" if you received that by email your guess is right ;-)
"coach": I would say "yes" because you surely know more about wikis than people that apply here for building a scratch-wiki in their own language.
Mtwoll (talk) 13:13, 17 October 2017 (UTC)
Hm, it seems like what you wrote in the "reasoning" box was not what got sent to my email...
Otherwise, great! I'll fully get to work now :)

Hebrew wiki

So I want to make the hebrew scratch wiki. I'm not alone: one person already requested an account here (but wasn't accepted yet), and the other 2 will request their accounts here soon. Can you add the Heb prefix? --Yzyzyz (talk) 15:21, 17 November 2017 (UTC)

Great! I will tell user:ErnieParke and user:Kenny2scratch and hope that one of them can do the preparation for HEB soon. Mtwoll (talk) 16:47, 17 November 2017 (UTC)
Thanks! Btw, can you check the account requests?--Yzyzyz (talk) 16:58, 17 November 2017 (UTC)
Did someone say account requests?
I'll add the prefixes in a moment. ErnieParke (talk) 01:06, 18 November 2017 (UTC)

DACH and French Scratch Wiki main page style, bot problems, some "Help:"pages are missing and Turkish Scratch Wiki infrastructure

I would like to add something to Turkish Scratch Wiki main page but I'm not sure in something. For example,I copied "Mitmachen!" in main page but I don't know German,so I used Google Translate. Also,I didn't understand some codes, like moving pictures in French wiki; versions, articles, categories, Leitfaden, projects sections in DACH wiki.I needed some help.

Also,Interwiki Bot isn't working,some articles are old,deleted or they isn't there.I know you aren't bot's owner,but you can send a post.

Some "Help:" pages are missing or they hasn't a translate page. Why?

I think we will launch real Turkish Scratch Wiki coming soon. You can look To-Do list 9th number. But first,we needed an infrastructure for Turkish Scratch Wiki.

I apologize for kept busy you,but I think these are important things.

Thank you very much for your engagement in the Turkish Scratch Wiki. You got multiple issues and many need investigation to find out what exactly is meant. As I only got few time I will come back to your questions ASAP but first ask other coaches of the Scratch community if they can help faster than me.
Okay,thanks.
└─post by Ahmetlii (talk|contribs) 07:14, 3 April 2019 (UTC)
Excuse me for answering very late. Which of your issues above could you already solve with the help of other Scratchers and which are still unsolved? Mtwoll (talk) 15:21, 9 May 2020 (UTC)

I actually solved a lot of the problem: I'm creating new translate pages when I need them, some Turkish Scratchers are helping this wiki with me (thanks to all of them), I translated the header of the Wiki, I added a lot of thing from DACH and French wiki - moving pictures, the disclaimer, the privacy policy- (thanks to jakel181 for moving pictures and thanks to Google Translator for the disclaimer and the privacy policy). I just have some little problems: I sent message about the IWB bot problem to ErnieParke, so I'm waiting for this, but I'm updating them manually as possible. I think the Turkish Wiki won't be a Real-Wiki in the near future, but I'm still working for it. Also, thanks for your helps.

Quick question on images

Can I change this image? Thanks. If I can't, I'll just upload another image.
Dilek10 (talk) 06:28, 9 May 2020 (UTC)

I like this picture, where do you want to replace it and what do you sugest to replace it with?
Do you mean at the Mainpage or where? Do you mean this one:

Mtwoll (talk) 13:25, 9 May 2020 (UTC)
If you just want to change it in tur you can upload an other picture and replace it just in the tur-Version of the article, to harm no other articles that use it Mtwoll (talk) 13:41, 9 May 2020 (UTC)
Ah, thanks for that "Replace it" suggestion! Replacing the image in tur was my intention.
Dilek10 (talk) 14:38, 11 May 2020 (UTC)

Just letting you know...

I changed one of the images in the Turkish Scratch Wiki homepage. Should it stay or should I change it back? Dilek10 (talk) 15:12, 12 May 2020 (UTC)

(In the future, I'm more approachable about matters like this, FYI.)
I like it! Though I recommend you get Ahmetlii (Scratch user, contribs, talk)'s agreement as well so you know for sure that it's fine. :)
└─post by kenny2scratch (talk|contribs) 17:04, 12 May 2020 (UTC)
First, thanks for translate the picture. I think it's fine. Also, I think everybody can change it with obey the general Wiki rules because we are still trying new main page styles and the Turkish Scratch Wiki needs a lot of help. This doesn't mean "you can do vandalism", also in the Real Turkish Wiki, we should protect the page and create a talk page. But using the Community Portal can be a good idea to inform everyone.
